University Tax and Compliance Manager

Position Description

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is seeking an experienced tax professional reporting directly to the University Controller. This individual must be skilled and experienced with the ability to provide collaborative leadership in the organization's accounting and related functions. S/he must possess strong communication skills and the ability to interact productively with all constituents of the University, articulating complex tax and compliance information in a way that can be understood at a level appropriate for the intended audience. Under the direction of the Controller, the Tax Manager will assist in providing leadership to the campus in the area of taxation and compliance. A history of successful oversight of nonprofit tax filings and related functions with results that are timely, accurate, and complete is essential, as well as experience in coordinating external tax audits, and overseeing, developing, and implementing robust internal controls.


  • Adhere to federal and state tax compliance requirements, resolve tax notices, gather data and assist in tax field exams.
  • Prepare University tax returns and related financial disclosures.
  • Review and/or prepare all filings requirements, including but not limited to; corporate filings, unrelated business income, international, value-added tax, bond compliance, employment, independent contractors, scholarships and fellowships, non-resident aliens, sales and use, real and personal property, excise, fuel, communication, utility, and occupancy.
  • Determine appropriate tax objectives, scope, and methodology and actively participate in decisions with University management to understand broader impact of decisions and solutions.
  • Take the initiative to propose and implement modifications to existing accounting policies and procedures that impact tax and compliance.
  • Review existing financial controls and provide recommendations for change to strengthen and maintain compliance with as outlined by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) and other regulatory agencies who have jurisdiction.
  • Develop tax-related communications and training for campus departmental personnel to improve awareness on tax matters and financial compliance.
  • Monitor the University's tax compliance, particularly in high risk tax areas, identify potential tax exposure due to non-compliance, recover taxes paid in error, if any, and facilitate process improvements to mitigate compliance gaps and weaknesses.
  • Demonstrate technical proficiency to review and develop lesser experienced staff in applied technical knowledge in corporate, federal, state, local, and foreign tax returns, estimated payments and extensions, and federal and state tax audits.
  • Coordinate with Controller’s Office on various domestic and international tax issues.
  • Effectively leverage available technology and other resources to maximize technical applications to support accurate and timely reporting.
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in tax trends and legislation including University standards and policies.
  • Benchmark against best practices and implement positive change.
  • Demonstrate strong business acumen, accounting knowledge, and communication skills.
  • Identify opportunities for efficiency or improved decision support to ensure that current practices meet the evolving needs of the University.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 3-5+ years of prior experience in higher education or public accounting with a focus on tax and compliance required.
  • A comprehensive understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and applicable tax regulations, management of complex transactions, and professional standards in accounting practice.
  • Specialized experience and strong technical skills pertaining to tax preparation and review, tax compliance, agency correspondence, and tax research; individual/fiduciary tax experience required.
  • Excellent analytical and communication skills is an essential element to this position.
  • Strong financial and analytical skills required to analyze information, practices, or procedures to: identify problems and inconsistencies, identify patterns, trends, and relationships, develop logical and objective conclusions; formulate alternatives and their implications.
  • Ability to perform efficient and accurate research, use computerized tax research service, and interpret applicability to University activities.
  • Strong skills in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite is imperative.
  • Flexibility in working hours during peak reporting periods required.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks appropriately, meet deadlines, execute with accuracy and recognize when issues need escalation.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Tax.
  • CPA.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Prior experience with Oracle, CCH, and/or Hyperion reporting tool.
